St Andrew’s Church, Blubberhouses

St Andrews Church, Blubberhouses

St Andrew’s Church, Blubberhouses, is a small chapel on the edge of the village near Fewston, North Yorkshire. It sits part way up a hill, allowing a number of different views of both the church and the surrounding countryside. The church was built in the 1850s for the estate workers at Blubberhouses Hall, so that they did not have to walk to the church in Fewston¹.

The classic shot of the church is from the Fewston car park, looking up the hill. I came at sunset over the course of two evenings in the hope of catching some low light on the side of the church. An interesting sky adds to the picture – this one isn’t particularly interesting, so I’ll be back to try this one again.

Walking right out of the car park and up the hill takes you into the church grounds. I liked how the sun was casting long shadows across the grass. I think this is one of my favourite shots:

If you go the other direction to the end of the car park, near the path that leads around Fewston reservoir, you will find a small gate in the wall that leads up a steep hill (signposted ‘public footpath’). From the field you have various vantage points looking back on the church and towards the setting sun. It was a bit hazy the day I took these, but I think there is a lot of potential is getting something good from here.

Finally back down in the car park, I thought I’d try something a bit different and went for a silhouette. The advantage of this is that you can’t see the couple of cars parked in the bottom right of the photo!
